Year 5
Welcome to Year 5, Queen Elizabeth Class!
Hello,
Welcome back to school. On this page, you will find key information about Year 5. If there is anything you can't find, please do contact the school office or speak with me directly.
You can dins the curriculum overview for Autumn 1 at the top of the blue download tabs below.
This term’s Year 5 staff team are as follows:
Miss Webber - Class Teacher
Mrs Lamont - Assistant Teacher
Mrs Moss - PPA cover Teacher
The School routine:
Class begins at 8:45, when children will complete a short ‘Good Morning Challenge’ which is designed to embed skills that have been previously taught. It is vital therefore, that the children arrive promptly.
There will be a daily worship at 10:15 followed by a guided reading session until 11:00. From 11:00 until 11:15 the children will have their breaktime. Lunch will then take place between 12:15 and 13:15.
At the end of the day, I will bring the children out onto the front playground where you can meet them.
PE days
PE will be on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
For PE lessons, the children will need blue/black PE shorts, a white T-shirt, trainers, spare socks and a tracksuit for when the weather turns colder as PE will still take place outside, whatever the weather! It’s also useful to have a spare plastic bag to keep the trainers separate from the clothing. Earrings, watches & Fitbits will need to be removed for the PE lessons and long hair tied back. Please label all items of clothing with your children’s names.
Water bottles and Lunch
Please send your child to school with a filled and named water bottle. The children can refill this when required, throughout the day.
School lunches can now only be ordered online in advance so please make sure you order in enough time!
Your child is welcome to bring a snack for break time, but please remember it should be a healthy choice (i.e. a piece of fruit).
Equipment
All Key Stage Two pupils are required to bring into school their own stocked pencil case. Pencil cases will be kept in your child’s tray so will need to be small and flat.
Please ensure your child’s pencil case includes the following:
- HB Pencils
- White pencil eraser
- Pencil sharpener
- 30cm ruler
- Small selection of coloured pencils
- Whiteboard pens
- Glue stick
- Green biro
- Pair of scissors
- Blue handwriting pen (Year 5/6)
Please ensure that all equipment is labelled with your child’s name to ensure it gets back to them should anything go missing. Please accept that biro are not suitable as a handwriting pen and therefore, they can not be used in school time.
Please check every so often that your child still has all of the items needed as whiteboard pens and glue sticks tend to run out quite quickly!
Homework:
Homework is an important aspect to help embed your children’s learning. As a school we are aiming to ensure our children's knowledge is strong in all subjects, therefore most of our homework is based around our Knowledge Organisers. We also know how important reading is in children's learning journey so this is a priority when doing homework.
Each week children are expected to:
- Spend at least 10 minutes per subject learning the information on their knowledge organisers (Science, History, Geography and Grammar)
- Spend at least 10 minutes a day on Times Tables Rockstars
- Spend at least 15 minutes a day reading their book
- Spend at least 5 minutes a day practicing their spellings
If you are struggling to complete this work at any point, then please do speak to me so I can support you and your child in school.
Reading
There is a real emphasis on reading currently throughout the school and it is highly important that children are able to read so they can access our broad curriculum. Reading helps develop vocabulary and has a positive effect overall on your children’s independent writing ability. Therefore, I ask that you please endeavour to read with your children as often as possible for around 10 minutes at a time. When reading has been completed at home, please record it in your yellow diaries. I will also be reading with your children as much as possible in school during 1:1 sessions, Vipers activities and during times such as our Good Morning Challenges. Please ensure that your child brings back their books regularly so they are on hand to read in school and that they are changing them once they have completed the book too.
As ever, we are very grateful for your commitment and support for the school and the children.
With thanks and best wishes,
Miss Webber
