Science at Bradfield CE Primary
At Bradfield C.E. Primary School, we encourage curiosity and have questions at the heart of our learning. Our lessons are driven by enquiries and children are supported to understand how science can be used to explain what is happening, predict how things will behave, and analyse the causes. We want our children to love science and feel empowered to embrace a rabbit hole of curiosity with the freedom and confidence to apply their growing scientific skills and knowledge that enables them to develop into future physicists, astronauts, engineers and explorers...
Throughout each stage of their scientific journey, our children build upon their existing knowledge and skills as part of a carefully planned progressive curriculum. This is designed to ensure that they are able to acquire and secure key scientific knowledge and skills through practical experiences; use of equipment, knowledge of key scientists, the planning and carrying out of investigations and the opportunity to interrogate the results.
Our science lessons are driven by questions as the starting point and allow opportunities to consider different avenues for further research. Planning for science is based on the National Curriculum 2014 and builds on prior themes so the children create an ever-deepening bank of knowledge and experiences to draw upon as they progress through the school. We want our children to make connections between scientific skills and concepts and use these to support their learning and understanding across other subject areas, especially mathematics and technology and we continue to inspire our children in an annual whole school science week. Children continually review their learning at the end of each topic and these ‘reflection’ tasks provide them with an opportunity to share their learning more widely with other children and through a variety of means e.g. learning presentations, talks, and report writing.
